Feb 2006 SQL Server Usergroup Talk

Last evening, I gave a full 2.5 hrs presentation on the following topics. The first part of the talk is a much lighter discussion on the data mining process, and how organizations can use them in creating value.

In the second part of the talk, I covered the theory behind Decision Trees (will be posting the summarized version here), and showed how decision trees can be easily built using the BI studio. At the end of the talk, I also showed how developers can make use of the data mining models built in an ASP.Net application using ADOMD.Net.

The sypnosis of the talk is as follows:

Part 1: Introduction to Data Mining in SQL Server 2005
Part 1 provides an overview of the data mining process in SQL Server 2005, and how an organization can make use of it to achieve Proactive Business Intelligence! We will cover data preparation ( e.g. types of data), the application needs addressed by each of the data mining algorithm, and how DMX can be used to query the data mining models built.

Part 2: Theory and Practical of Decision Trees In the second part of the talk, we will provide everyone with a quick crashcourse into the theory on decision trees. Next, we will then demonstrate how one can build decision trees models in SQL Server 2005 and make use of it to do predictions in applications.

Thanxs to all those who attended the talk! Hope it was useful and you have gained new knowledge! Send me comments on how I can improve, or a BI problem you are currently facing and intend to solve it using the data mining techniques in SQL Server 2005.

If you are interested in the slide decks for the talk, drop me an email.
